Who is Eartha Mae?

Written and performed by Jade Wheeler with music direction by Josh Cullen

“Who Is Eartha Mae” sheds light on Eartha Kitt’s life of “cotton and caviar”. Opening at a life-altering dance audition, the writing explores Eartha Mae Kitt’s childhood in Jim-Crow era South Carolina, re-examines the infamous 1968 White House luncheon that led to her being blacklisted, and reveals her vulnerable side to her close friends. Jade Wheeler is known for her work with regional theatres including Woolly Mammoth, GableStage, and Asolo Rep and has since ventured into film and voice-over. Last year she wrote and workshopped this solo show, transforming a lull in work into an opportunity.

So, why Eartha Kitt? Jade Wheeler states, “Eartha Mae Kitt had a unique voice and style and didn’t apologize for it. She refused to conform or be discouraged…and not many of us in this industry can say that. I admire her tenacity.” Wheeler’s primary goal for the show is to give insight into the shy, scared little girl named Eartha Mae who evolved into the Eartha Kitt who seduced audiences the world over.  “Who is Eartha Mae” will be presented October 9th, 2016 at 2pm at The Studio Theatre at Theatre Row in New York City.

Tickets may be purchased for $20.25 at the Theatre Row Box Office, through Telecharge online at www.telecharge.com or 212-239-6200 More information on the show at http://unitedsolo.org/us/whoisearthamae-2016/ or www.facebook.com/whoisearthamae
